Czech Delegation Visits UG to Enhance Partnerships

A delegation from the Czech Republic has visited the University of Ghana, to discuss issues of mutual interest and opportunities for ongoing and further collaboration.

The delegation, composed of the Government Commissioner in the Czech Republic, Tomáš Kopečný, and the Deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Ghana, Mr. Matěj Denk, was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor by the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah.

Touching on the purpose of the visit, the Head of the Department of Political Science , Professor Alidu Seidu, in brief remarks, highlighted the longstanding staff and student exchange relationship between the Department and the University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic.

He stated that the current visit of representatives from the Czech Government aims to consolidate the achievements thus far and foster partnerships between other universities in the Czech Republic and various departments and institutes of the University of Ghana.

The Government Commissioner in the Czech Republic, who led the delegation, expressed the Czech Government's plan to deepen collaborations not only with the Political Science Department but also to extend the scope of cooperation to other academic units of the University, particularly the Medical School.

He mentioned an existing agreement between Ghana and the Czech Republic, which allows Czech doctors to work in local hospitals and vice versa. Mr. Kopečný further outlined the plan to establish a branch of a Czech political think tank in Accra by the end of 2024, focusing on Ghana and the African sub-region.

The Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, welcomed the idea of expanding the Czech partnership to other departments and institutions of the University of Ghana.

She suggested involving the International Programmes Office (IPO) in formalising the potential Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) between the two parties for the foreseeable future and also expressed her enthusiasm for establishing a mutually beneficial relationship beyond the existing collaboration with the Political Science Department.

The Registrar stated, "I am happy to hear about your university and the fact that you have a longstanding relationship with the Political Science Department. The International Programmes Office will come in handy so that probably the relationship could be formalised. We could look at doing a Memorandum of Understanding in which we can specifically state what each side is looking for, what we will work towards, and what we expect from each other.”

“I think the basis of that will be to build a mutually beneficial relationship apart from what you already have going on with the Department of Political Science. So, I hope this meeting will prove to be a stepping stone so we can take the relationship to the next level.” Mrs. Agyei-Mensah added.

Also present at the meeting were Senior Lecturer at the Political Science Department, Dr. Rosina Foli; Senior Assistant Registrar of Public Affairs, Ms. Pascaline Songsore; Assistant Registrar at the Public Affairs Directorate, Mrs. Agnes Baidoo.
